Course summary The degree will focus on the study of the history of Scotland post-1500 to the twentieth century.

Course description How do I attend?

This course can be studied either full-time or part-time. The course is delivered on a blended learning basis, involving the use of e-learning: online, open learning material and independent study. The course is therefore available for study through all the NHC campuses with most modules requiring some college attendance for video conferencing. As a networked degree, this course is therefore available at all college campuses.

What will I study?
This degree studies Scottish history within a northern European and northern Atlantic perspective, focusing on the sultural, political, social and economic links between Scotland and these regions. Specific modules will focus on the history of the distinctive Highlands and islands region will also be offered.

In the first and second years, students follow a traditional broad approach to the study of history which involves taking modules from a number of history topics. In years three and four, focused studies will take an in-depth examination of particular topics of Scottish history allowing students to study the history of the nation and the Highlands and Islands region in detail. A range of modules will examine specific aspects of historical discipline such as gender history and emographic history within a comparative and/or Scottish setting.

The following modules are included:

Year One: Introduction to skills for history, The Atlantic world, and Modern British history.

Year two: The Scottish Highlands 1850-2005, The economic and social transformation of Scotland, Popular protest and the modern state, and Building Scotland

Year three: Histiographical essay, History theory, Environmental history, Scotland and Ireland 1800-1939, History of the early modern family, Scottish military history, and Crown-magnate relations in the medieval Highlands and Islands.

Year four: A core dissertation and double credit modules in the following topics: Social history of work, Highland emigration, Macbeth man and myth, Scarcity, dearth and famine 1550-1850, Life death and disease.

What could I do next?
The broad ranging transferable and academic skills that are acquired by History graduates make them attractive to employers from many different and non-History related sectors. Potential careers, or opportunities for future study include teacher, archivist, researcher and postgraduate study.

Course Fees for Part Time Students

The units which count towards this qualification are available on an individual basis, making it possible for part time students to gather sufficient units to achieve the award, albeit over a longer period.

You may not have to pay any fees for these units if you qualify for a fee waiver, for instance if you are eligible for certain benefits. See the college's Fee Waiver Policy in the resources area of the website.

It is possible to use a current Individual Learning Account (ILA200) to pay for these units as you come to study them.

Part time students may also possible qualify for the ILA500, which is a £500 grant for students studying HNC, HND, Degree and taught Postgraduate courses. You must study units totally 40 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework (SCQF) credits or more a year.
