Below is only a suggestion of techniques and will be adapted to suit individual abilities/needs. This course aims to equip each student with the skills needed to operate a sewing machine confidently and the basic principles of garment construction/soft furnishing. It is intended as a stepping stone course leading onto learning through individual projects.

Course programme

  • Welcome and Introductions: Introduction to the sewing machine and other equipment
  • Seams and Finishes Open, Zig-zag, Tip Stitched
  • Seams and finishes. Mock Flat Felled, Flat Felled, French
  • Piping: Seams, Edges Students will need to bring in a minimum of 1m No 1/2/3 Piping Cord
  • Overlap zip (Students will need to bring a 6 or 8 inch standard skirt zip) lesson.
  • Curves Seams Bust/waist. Construction of simple top shape and sleeve - pattern provided.
  • Consolidating skills learnt: production of piped scatter cushion with zip fastening
  • Preparation for personal project: Understanding pattern technology and markings/symbols. Tracing off patterns to size. Evaluation and review including discussion with tutor re continuation of project or starting next project.
