Course structure Learning and teachingThis module is delivered over six days, 10am - 5pm.
The 2015/16 dates are as follows:
Thursday, 11 February and Friday, 12 February
Thursday, 25 and Friday, 26 February
Thursday, 10 and Friday, 11 March
Case study material will be supplied, as well as recommended reading to support each session.
Learning outcomes:By the end of the module students should be able to:
- Develop and present an argument using key concepts and contemporary research data;
- Critically assess changing legislative, policy and practice frameworks;
- Recognise the similarities and differences between a range of forms of sexual violence in childhood and adulthood
- Draw on and apply explanatory frameworks and social science concepts.
- The extent and forms of sexual violence in child and adulthood
- To critically examine theoretical, conceptual and explanatory frameworks
- To locate legal reform, support services and policy development in historical and comparative contexts
- To examine the impacts and consequences for individuals and for gender and generational relations
- To explore prevention and work with perpetrators in context of contemporary sexual norms and cultures
Sexual abuse in childhood, rape and sexual assault of adults, sexual exploitation including pornography, prostitution, trafficking and other aspects of the sex industry and sexual harassment. Course content will cover:
- Definitions and prevalence
- Impacts and meanings
- Legislative frameworks and the criminal justice response
- Sexual cultures
- Perpetrators
