The shoemaker is a craftsman who makes and repairs shoes and accessories such as bags, belts and leather clothing. The work of the shoemakers is mostly concentrated in the repair. The term shoemaker, referring to the art of the shoemaker and the place where he works, is also used to indicate the shop where shoes are sold. The first guilds of people exercising this profession arose in the Middle Ages, when San Crispino became their patron saint. Obviously the realization of a shoe required numerous technical skills on the part of a craftsman, on whose skill the quality of the final product depended. However, in the 1950s the mechanized production of footwear developed, which led to a significant reduction in production time and costs, inevitably putting artisan producers in crisis. The operations can range from the replacement of the top to the complete resoling in leather as well as, thanks to the new gluing techniques, the replacement of the complete bottoms of trekking shoes (mountain boots) and everyday footwear that have a rubber bottom. . The materials they use the most are leather, rubber and leather.
