The target audience for NOR-INTRO is exchange students with granted admission to the University of Bergen. The course is ideal for international students who plan to take one introductory course in Norwegian language and culture in addition to regular program courses.

You cannot proceed to NOR-U2 after NOR-INTRO.

This introductory language course focuses on vocabulary connected to topics such as introducing oneself and others, study, food, clothing, accommodation, weather and familiar situations and events.

The course focuses to a large extent on oral language skills. Students will practice basic Norwegian phrases and pronunciation, and they will be able to have simple conversations in Norwegian about their daily life. Students will also practice reading and writing simple texts and listening to spoken Norwegian.

Learning Outcomes
  • After successfully completing this course, students:
Knowledge
  • Can understand and use common expressions and very basic Norwegian phrases
Skills
  • Are able to introduce themselves and others
  • Are able to ask and answer basic questions about topics covered in the course
  • Can communicate in a simple way and use very basic Norwegian vocabulary and grammar
  • Can understand spoken Norwegian provided other persons talk slowly and clearly about topics covered in the course
  • Can read and write simple texts about topics covered in the course
General competence
  • Are able to produce and understand basic Norwegian expressions and phrases related to topics covered in the course
Compulsory Assignments and Attendance
  • Attendance is mandatory. Participants who are absent more than 25% of the time will not be permitted to take the exam.
  • The compulsory requirements are valid for three semesters. This includes the semester when the lectures are given and the following two semesters.
Forms of Assessment
  • The course concludes with an oral examination in Norwegian.
  • The oral exam is graded as pass/fail.
