"The silk worker is the one who carries out the noble art of silk processing, a term that, with the passage of time, is also attributed to the retailers of the raw and processed product. Silk is imported from China and, in minimal quantities, from other countries. It can be imported as raw yarn in skein, more rarely already spooled, or already woven into smooth articles (twill, satin, crepe de chine), worked or jacquard. Imported silk fabrics from China arrive in Italy already treated with a boiled-off procedure that eliminates 25% of sericin and therefore weight, with evident savings in transport costs. These patches are often cleaned in Italy, in order to eliminate any residues present on the fabric. Silk, the only natural fiber to be produced with a continuous thread, it is obtained from the cocoon of Bombyx mori, an insect that feeds on mulberry leaves.
