Course programme

The course normally lasts for about 6 hours and will introduce you to all the basics of handling the clay, shaping, texturing etc. as well as different methods to finish off your designs. You will also be given the opportunity to try Art Clay Silver in a syringe.

The Introductory course is aimed at those who wish to discover more about using silver metal clay as a hobby, the first step in learning a new skill or as a way to enhance existing skills such as silversmithing, glass fusing or ceramics. Students learn from where the silver is sourced and about how silver clay is made.

The different forms are described together with their uses, with many examples being available for students to view.

The first project covers how to handle the clay, how to store it, how to reconstitute and recycle it and how to conserve as much of the material as possible.

Using their own choice of textures and cutters, the students make a simple pendant which covers all the basic techniques for forming a piece. Pre-finishing techniques and their importance are demonstrated before students prepare their own piece for firing.

All students learn how to torch-fire a piece and how to use a gas hob to fire several pieces at the same time. After firing their piece students learn how to finish and polish their pieces, the correct way to open and close jump rings and how to correctly orient a chain so that the pendant can be worn. The remaining projects are the choice of the student – another pendant, earrings or a charm – to their own design.

A comprehensive, bound set of course notes are given to each student for them to keep.
