Course programme

The following training programme and assessments must be completed to qualify for the Scottish Sub-Aqua Club Snorkel Diver Award. The candidate may only proceed with this programme once all notes on pool training have been read and fully explained. Assessments in each group must be completed at a single pool session. The candidate must also attend all recommended snorkel training lectures (or attain sufficient knowledge) and then pass the Snorkel Diver Award Theory Assessment.

SWIMMING ASSESSMENT

  1. Swim 200m freestyle (except backstroke) without stopping.
  2. Swim 100m on the back.
  3. Swim 50m wearing a weight belt of sufficient weight. Not to be over buoyant.
  4. Float on back for 5 minutes with minimal hand and leg movement.
  5. Tread water for 30 seconds with hands and forearms clear of the water.
  6. Recover three objects, one at a time, from a depth not less than 1.8 m or greater than 3m.
  7. Swim a distance of 15m underwater.

BASIC SNORKEL ASSESSMENT(FINS, MASKS, SNORKEL AND B.C TO BE USED THROUGHOUT)

  1. Sink all equipment in deep end, duck dive, recover and fit on surface whilst treading water and then clear mask underwater, whilst using snorkel.
  2. Fin 200m, diving to the bottom at least every 20m, demonstrating a correctly executed surface dive each time.
  3. Tow a snorkel diver, of equal weight, 50m by a recognised method to the satisfaction of the Instructor.
  4. As a test of mobility and buoyancy control, demonstrate three forward and three backward rolls, using minimal arm and leg movement. Breaths may be taken between each roll.
  5. Fin 20m underwater.
  6. Submerge for 30 seconds underwater without mask and snorkel.
  7. Without mask and snorkel tread water for one minute with hands and forearms clear of the water.

ADVANCED SNORKEL ASSESSMENT (FINS, MASK, SNORKEL, B.C., WEIGHT BELT AND WEIGHTS TO BE WORN THROUGHOUT)

  1. Fin 100m neutrally buoyant.
  2. Adjust buoyancy to neutral, whilst treading water at the deep end. Remove mask, surface dive and place on pool bottom. Surface and fin 100m with face submerged using snorkel tube only.
  3. Complete 2 at the deep end, surface dive and recover and replace mask and fit whilst treading water. Give OK signal.
  4. Orally inflate and deflate your B.C. on the surface.
  5. Carry out a simulated rescue. Answering a surface distress signal, fin 50m at speed to the victim. Inflate B.C. as necessary and tow a further 50m giving R.B. Land body at the deep end and continue with R.B. & E.C.C. for two minutes, finally placing victim in recovery position. Answer questions from Instructor re exercise.
OPEN WATER SNORKEL ASSESSMENTS
  1. Training assessments to be taken with snorkel equipment, B.C. and weighted for neutral buoyancy.
  2. Fin 500m in open water.
  3. Snorkel dive to a depth of 6m and recover an object.
  4. Perform a simulated rescue of a snorkel diver in open water and tow 50m by a recognised method, whilst giving R.B.
  5. Act as a snorkel cover for a party of divers on two separate occasions, maintaining contact with, and marking position of divers. Render assistance as necessary.
