This short, university credit bearing course will provide a sociological framework in understanding key contemporary issues within the health and social care context.
About this course
You will:
Be able to provide evidence of previous study at Level 5 or above in a related subject area including but not limited to health and social care, social work, health promotion or youth work
Be a health care professional with access to an environment where you will be able to apply your skills to achieve the individual module learning outcomes. This does not specifically need to be employment and could include voluntary work
If you are a registered nurse but do not have a degree qualification, once you’ve completed this module you could offset the 20 credits through recognised prior learning (RPL) towards our online BSc (Hons) Nursing Studies (Top-Up) degree. This would reduce the number of modules you would need to study and the total cost of the course.
Alternatively, if you are a health and social care practitioner you may wish to offset the 20 credits by progressing to the online BSc (Hons) Integrative Health and Social Care (Top-Up) degree.

Course programme
This module will provide a sociological framework in understanding key contemporary issues within the health and social care context. Sociological health and social care will provide a basis for understanding and making sense of broader developments which have impacted on global and local influences within politics and the welfare state of society. In this context, students will draw on other interrelated interdisciplinary approaches of social science, social policy, sociopolitical and economic values on which health and social care is founded.
The module will focus on a range of perspectives from sociology of health and social care in offering an understanding of the family, homelessness, migration, social policy, social stratification and inequalities, contemporary debates in health and social care health within an international context. The module will also provide a framework for practitioners to analyse events within their working environment, drawing on the historical development of health and social care, nationally and globally within a broad base sociological context.
