Description of Major
The program in Music Education prepares students to become professional Music Educators. Entering students have auditions to determine placement in appropriate applied music classes. Students choose as their principal instrument: voice, piano, harp, guitar, organ or a band or orchestral instrument. Students must complete a teaching internship. Students choose a program in Choral, Instrumental, or General Music Education. Upon completion of this program, students receive the Bachelor of Music Education (B.M.E.) degree and qualify for Florida Teacher Certification in Music Education K-12.

Admission Requirements to the Major
All entering students must meet appropriate minimum standards through a placement audition (heard by a faculty jury) in applied music before being granted admission to the College of Music.

Students seeking admission to teacher education must meet the following requirements:
1. meet the general criteria for transfer into an FSU degree-granting program (see Bulletin),
2. complete General Education requirements or an A.A. degree with a grade of C or higher in each freshman English and each basic mathematics course
3. complete the Pre-education core listed above.

4. achieve a passing score on the general knowledge portion of the FTCE
5. achieve an overall 2.50 or higher GPA
6. Students are required to be fingerprinted and pass a security clearance prior to admission to the major program of studies.

Music Education students must maintain satisfactory academic standing (2.50 overall GPA, 3.00 cumulative music GPA). Students must apply for admission to the Professional Sequence upon completion of 45 hours and must contact the Music Education faculty for current criteria and procedures early in the sophomore year.

Requirements

Major Program of Studies at FSU (98 hours)
Consult resource personnel for specific requirements of program selected. NOTE: Program completion includes passing the basic skills, professional knowledge, and subject area tests that are required for teacher certification in the state of Florida. Certification to teach in Florida requires a minimum 2.50 GPA in the field of specialization.
