Sociology A Level Course This distance learning A Level Sociology course has been designed to the latest specifications. The first available exam dates for this version of the AQA Sociology A Level are in June 2017. Sociology is a great A Level subject because the knowledge and skills you can learn are often transferable to other areas of study. This course covers some really interesting topics, like crime, cultural identity and the media. But, more importantly, you will learn about the methods used to study these things, like qualitative and quantitative research, data collection and analysis, as well as more general aspects of academic practice. All of these skills are highly sought after in the jobs market, and will also serve you in good stead if you choose to proceed to higher education. This course has been designed to reflect the 'Integral Elements' and 'Core Themes' of the latest Sociology A Level specifications, as defined by AQA. These are as follows: Integral Elements All the following must be an integral part of the study of each topic area: Sociological theories, perspectives and methods The design of the research used to obtain data under consideration, including its strengths and limitations Attention must be given to drawing out the links between topic areas studied Core Themes Students must study the following two core themes: Socialisation, culture and identity Social differentiation, power and stratification The themes should be understood and applied to particular substantive areas of Sociology. AQA A Level in Sociology: *AQA Qualification Code: 7192
This qualification is assessed across three examinations, details of which are given below. When you book your exams it is important you provide your chosen exam centre with the above qualification code. It is always the responsibility of the student to book their own exams as private candidates and to pay all exam fees directly to their chosen centre. UKDLP will offer a list of recommended test centres when you enrol.
Paper 1: Education with Theory and Methods
Assessment details:
- 2 hour examination
- 80 marks
- 33.3% of A Level
What is assessed?
- Compulsory content from 4.1.1, 4.1.2 and 4.1.3
Questions:
- 50 marks = Education: short answer and extended writing
- 20 marks = Methods in Context: extended writing
- 10 marks = Theory and Methods: extended writing
Paper 2: Topics in Sociology
Assessment details:
- 2 hour examination
- 80 marks
- 33.3% of A Level
What is assessed?
- Section A: one from option 1: 4.2.1, 4.2.2, 4.2.3 or 4.2.4
- Section B: one from option 2: 4.2.5, 4.2.6, 4.2.7 or 4.2.8
Questions:
- 40 marks = Section A: extended writing
- 40 marks = Section B: extended writing
Paper 3: Crime and Deviance with Theory and Methods
Assessment Details:
- 2 hour examination
- 80 marks
- 33.3% of A Level
What is assessed?
- Compulsory content from 4.3.1 and 4.3.2
Questions:
- 50 marks = Crime and Deviance: short answer and extended writing
- 30 marks = Theory and Methods: extended writing
Study Hours
This is only an approximate figure and is dependant upon how much time you can dedicate to your studies and how well you grasp the learning concepts in the course material. Furthermore, at the end of each lesson there is a question paper that needs to be completed and returned to your tutor. You should allow at least 1 - 2 hours of study to complete each question paper.
