You'll focus on human rights, international development, globalisation, urbanisation and emerging transnational communities. You'll need a solid understanding of both social theory and the theories of international relations.
During the course, you'll analyse international co-operation and conflict, ranging from theinfluence of international relations in domestic politics, particularly the politics of social identity, international development organisations and the relationship between war and the economy.
You'll also explore how social justice and human rights problems can be addressed at an international level. You'll gain a thorough knowledge of sociological approaches to international relations and acquire a wide range of transferable skills relevant to national and international development organisations, associated private and public sector organisations, and related NGOs and charities.

About this course
Enables you to make connections between sociological theories and international relations and the organisation of societies, states and the international system.
Ensures that you have a sound knowledge of the development of social structures in Britain, Europe and globally, alongside any emerging social problems.
Equips you with a wide range of transferable skills relevant to national and international development organisations, associated private and public sector organisations, and related NGOs and charities.
You'll develop a knowledge of, and sensitivity to, the complexity and diversity of social processes in different societies.
You'll be equipped with the knowledge, understanding and skills to engage critically with debates about the relationship between globalisation, social cohesion, international development and human rights.
Sociology and international relations graduates are well placed to enter careers involving social research, social policy formation and administration, human resources, teaching, and social commentary and analysis. After graduating you might be employed by local and national government, educational establishments, media organisations, advocacy organisations, health and welfare services.

Plus: GCSE candidates are normally required to hold five GCSE subjects grades A*–C including Mathematics and English Language (or comparable numeric score under the newly reformed GCSE grading).
