Sociology explores both individual human behavior and collective human behavior, including the effect and impact of the way people and societies co-exist. Sociology creates the foundations that allow us to understand social issues and social problems as well as find ways to cope with these problems. The JKU's Bachelor's degree program in Sociology is not only a broad, interdisciplinary, and solid curriculum providing strong theoretical foundations, students also learn how to effectively apply empirical social research methods. Students can customize the program and pursue areas of personal interest (such as migration, politics, health, and work). Graduates have numerous career options and career prospects in a variety of professions.

The Bachelor's degree in Sociology focuses on conveying the following skills and abilities:
Analyze complex social contexts
Plan empirical projects and correctly implementing the methodology
Create research reports, preparing and presenting findings
Derivation of action and design proposals based on academic and scientific research findings
Generate scientifically sound information and data based on quantitative and qualitative methods and theoretical reflection
Moreover, the program aims to continually develop core competence skills:
The ability to express one's self professionally in speech and in writing
Independently examine scientific and academic literature as well as process and create academic texts
Recognize differences and similarities when examining academic and scientific arguments and their structuring
Willingness to explore statistical and qualitative methods and their applications
Social skills and team skills
General higher education entrance qualifications (such as an Austrian “Matura” diploma)
