Introduction The course will enable students to develop a critical knowledge and understanding of society today, focusing in particular on Families & Households, Education, Religion and Crime & Deviance. Students will also examine the strengths and weaknesses of research methods in Sociology. The course is suitable for students who have a broad interest in social issues and who want to examine theories, studies and research in detail.
Qualification AS/A Level

Assessment The course is taught and assessed in units
Costs There may be small additional costs related to revision guides, optional visits and trips e.g. to revision conferences and an annual trip to Warwick University etc.
Duration 1 year to AS level and an additional year to A level
Other Details Subjects that link particularly well with this course are History, Politics, Philosophy, Media Studies, Film Studies, Psychology, English Language & Literature. To be successful in this course students should feel relatively confident in their ability to take an interest in sociological theories, studies and research in relation to the key areas of society studied.
Progression Options Students who are successful at AS level may wish to complete an additional year to achieve the A level qualification from which higher study perhaps at degree level in this or a related area is a possibility. As part of a wider programme the course provides an excellent basis for progression to any career or university course. Sociology will support a career in a wide range of areas, including human resources, social & welfare work, police, local government, management etc. The analytical skills developed in this course are particularly valued by employers across a very broad spectrum.
