Sound Design

When you think film, you may initially just think images. Film as we know it today is unimaginable without sound, though (the early silent movies notwithstanding).Film is about image and sound together. Where most specialists in this field focus primarily on telling a story in images, the sound designer focuses on the story in sounds. In that role, you design everything that the audience hears. Based on the screenplay (fiction) or film plan (documentary), you come up with a sound concept and a vision about the soundscape in the frame and off screen.

The effects of sound
Nearly all sound design students have been working with sound for some time, and nearly all of them are interested in music, although that’s not a requirement. This specialisation does not require perfect pitch or the ability to play a range of instruments. Many students are fascinated by conveying stories and emotions via sound.

Sound design is a combination of three specialisations: sound recording, editing and mixing. The connections and interaction between these elements help to shape the substance of the images, playing an important role in the film. During the study programme, students work very closely with other fields. Students from Screenwriting, Directing and Production also need to realise that using sound in meaningful ways can elevate a film to a higher level.
