Our Spanish & Latin American Studies with a year abroad BA gives you the opportunity to immerse yourself in all aspects of Spanish and Hispanic language, literature and cultural history at a world-class university in the heart of London. The department is especially strong in medieval and early modern studies, and modern literatures and cultures from Spain and Latin America. King’s has been teaching Spanish since 1831 and has one of the country’s most highly rated Spanish departments for teaching and research.
The Department of Spanish is currently ranked 6th in the UK (QS World Rankings by Subject 2018).

The year spent studying abroad offers you the chance to immerse yourself in a new culture and society and achieve language fluency.

In your first year you will explore an unrivalled range of topics covering literature, history, film, music and visual arts from the Hispanic and Lusophone worlds. In your second and third years, you will have the chance to take up more optional modules and focus your study on your areas of interest.
We have exchanges with a number of global partner universities, and the opportunity to apply for the English Language Assistantship Programme or to undertake an internship/ work placement in a Spanish-speaking environment (typically sourced by students themselves).
Your degree will equip you with the language skills, cultural awareness and critical independence necessary to compete successfully in almost limitless range of careers. Recent graduates have gone on to gain employment in areas including business and commerce, finance, marketing, accountancy, law, the Civil Service, the media, charitable and non-governmental organizations, while others have remained in higher education to gain a teaching qualification or continue their studies at postgraduate level.
Please note that A-level General Studies, Critical Thinking, Thinking Skills and Global Perspectives are not accepted by King's as one of your A-levels. However, if offered the grade achieved may be taken into account when considering whether or not to accept a candidate who has just fallen short of the conditions of their offer.

Course programme
Courses are divided into modules. Each year you will normally take modules totalling 120 credits.
Required ModulesYou are required to take the following modules:
- Core Spanish Language (30 credits)
- Global Iberias (30 credits)
You are also required to take four modules, totalling 60 credits, from a range of options, which may typically include:
- Image: Visual Culture in the Global Iberias (15 credits)
- Introduction to Spanish American Narrative (15 credits)
- From Frontier to Empire: Cultures in Contact in the Medieval & Early Modern Iberian Worlds (15 credits)
- Introduction to Modern Hispanic Culture (15 credits)
- Spain in the C20th (15 credits)
Required Modules
- Spanish Language II (30 credits)
You are also required to take six optional modules, totalling 90 credits, from a wide range of options which may typically include:
- Catalan Language (15 credits)
- The Study of Gender in Spanish American Literature & Culture (15 credits)

- Fatherlands: Spain & Portugal under the Dictators (15 credits)
