Ornithology online course. This level 3 course will assist students in exploring the world of birds. Learners are able to register online 365 days a year.
This course will allow students to:
Understand the form and function of feathers
Describe the physics and biology of flight in birds
Recognise different modes of bird flight
Understand the reasons behind migration
Summarise how birds are physically able to undertake vast migrations
Understand how different birds are able to navigate incredibly long distances
Analyse the sex organs of birds & the importance and structure of the egg
Explain family dynamics and the use of nests in the nurturing of young
Describe mating systems found in birds and various courtship rituals
Differentiate between different diets, foraging and predator avoidance methods

About this course
The aim of this course is to heighten awareness of the term autism and autism spectrum disorder.
Define autism
Understand the difference between autism and Asperger’s syndrome
Explain the gender differences
dentify conditions related to ASD
Explain how research in other conditions can help research into autism
Aimed at students looking to develop their awareness of autism when working with autistic individuals.
Students looking to enrol onto this course should meet the following criteria:
Be aged 16 Years or above
Possess a solid knowledge of the english language - Recommended GCSE Grade C Min.
Have access to a PC and the internet for the duration of the whole course
Basic computer skills: e.g Word processing, emailing, uploading documents etc
Have a genuine desire to succeed
ABC QLS – Level 3 Ornithology Award – Certificate of Achievement
At the end of this course successful learners will receive a Certificate of Achievement by ABC Awards and a Learner Unit Summary (which lists the details all of the units you have completed as part of your course).

UNIT 3: EGGS & NESTS
- Reproductive system of male and female birds
- General structure and production of the egg
- Reasons for specific egg shell patterns
- Variety of nesting strategies and their importance in incubation
UNIT 4: MATING & COURTSHIP
- Four main mating systems witnessed in birds
- Selection of courtship strategies in birds
- Importance and functions of bird song
- Family dynamics of a typical bird nest
UNIT 5: FEEDING & PREDATION
- Diets found in different bird species
- Species of bird track down food or prey
- Feeding territories and other methods that optimise foraging
- Variety of methods utilised by birds to avoid predators
UNIT 6: POPULATIONS & CONSERVATION
- Various factors can affect the size of bird populations
- Ecological concept of community
- Variety of methods by which communities diversify
- Conservation with respect to bird populations and species
Learners will be required to complete a series of tutor marked assignments ( normally 1 after each unit) as they progress through this course. Each assignment will contain a variety of tasks/questions. These assignments are assessed by your tutor to monitor progress. You will be provided with constructive feedback to help you in completing each unit to the required standard.
