Required subjects
The normal entry requirement for the BSc is a Diploma in Higher Education (120 Level 5 credits) (or overseas equivalent). Applicants with other backgrounds or qualifications can be considered.
If you do not meet the normal entry requirements or you have only the minimum academic standard, you should pay particular attention in preparing your supporting statement and CV to ensure that you draw attention to evidence of potential success at undergraduate level. This might include accreditation of prior experience.
Applicants wishing to enrol on this pathway must have secured sponsorship from a community healthcare organisation for the duration of the programme. These organisations advertise their sponsorships for health visiting and school nurse training through NHS Jobs. To gain updates on the process contact the Programme Leader.
Applicants must be a qualified or newly registered level 1 nurse (all branches) or midwife.
Your King's application is made in addition to the application for Trust sponsorship through NHS Jobs. You may complete the King's application form at any time but you can only obtain a place on the programme of study if you have obtained sponsorship from a Trust.
Do you want to apply for the Health Visiting or School Nursing Programme in 2018/19? To gain sponsorship most Trusts will require a numeracy and literacy assessment undertaken at a participating university. Find out more and book your assessment today.

Course programme
Course detail Description
The Specialist Community Public Health Visiting/School Nursing BSc course offers two pathways of study. Initially, you will undertake modules in Leadership in Public Health, Evidence-Based Practice, Child Protection and Specialist Practice.
If you are looking to follow the Health Visitor pathway, then you will also undertake an additional nurse prescribing module. Alternatively, the School Nurse pathway the course follows a more clinically focused option.
These choices are designed to equip you with the evidence to demonstrate eligibility to register for specialist practitioner status with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). This course may also be suitable if you are a registered practitioner seeking further educational opportunities covering supporting autonomous practice, educational and practice development or exercising clinical leadership.
Teaching style
You can expect approximately 510 hours of scheduled contact time, which may include lectures, seminars, tutorials, project supervision and workshops.
To complete the course and receive the professional award, you are required to meet the Nursing and Midwifery Council Standard of a minimum of 113 days of practice. This timescale will include 55 days learning and 15 days gaining relevant experience in areas of responsibility, even if not central to the defined area of practice (i.e. Health Visiting or School Nursing). It also includes a minimum of 50 days of consolidated training at the end of the programme to enable you to strengthen your education and competence in the practice field (Health Visiting or School Nursing). Your overall time spent in practice will total 120 days.
You will also spend approximately 540 hours of independent study, such as preparing for scheduled sessions, follow-up work, wider reading, and completion of assessment tasks and revision.
Assessment
Fifty per cent of the programme is undertaken in practice and students’ achievement of the Nursing and Midwifery Council Standards of Proficiency is assessed during this element by a practice teacher. Fifty per cent of the programme is undertaken in theory, here students are assessed through coursework such as; essays, portfolios and dissertations, along with an unseen written examination.
The study time and assessment methods detailed above are typical and give you a good indication of what to expect. However, they may change if the course modules change.
