About this course

You will need a genuine love of football and have had recent experience of playing for your school or local team. You will normally have at least one of the following:- BTEC Foundation Certificate in a related subject; 4 GCSE's at grades D-G or other related level 1 or 2 qualifications.

Who is this course for? This exciting programme offers you the opportunity to gain a First Diploma in Sport (equivalent of 4 GCSE's at grades A-C and the chance to develop your football skills to higher levels. The college works in partnership with Newtown Football Club who provides the facilities for the practical activities. Learners on the programme will have the opportunity to try out for Welsh School Boys, Welsh Colleges and play each week in the English Colleges Football League.

Previous knowledge required: You will need a genuine love of football and have had recent experience of playing for your school or local team. You will normally have at least one of the following:- BTEC Foundation Certificate in a related subject; 4 GCSE's at grades D-G or other related level 1 or 2 qualifications.

What will I study? The course is designed to give a wide range of skills. You will study a First Diploma in Sport and up to two other First Certificates chosen from Public Services, ICT, Business and Hospitality.

What else will I do? Key skills Communication, Application of Number and Working with Others. Emergency First Aid and a range of OCNW football related courses. Time will be allocated each week for recreational activities at Maldwyn Leisure Centre. Learners may also have the chance to play in the English Colleges League, the Welsh Schools and Colleges Cup (u19) and represent Newtown FC for weekend games. You will also be able to attend trials for the Welsh Colleges and the Welsh School Boys team.

How will I be assessed? Portfolio based assessment - no external examinations.

What will I achieve? On successful completion of the course you will achieve a BTEC First Diploma/Certificate for each chosen subject as well as Key Skills, Emergency First Aid and a range of OCNW football related courses.

What can I do afterwards? You can return to college to study a Level 3 qualification (A level equivalent) or progress into a football related job locally, nationally or internationally. Recently a number of students have progressed from the Level 3 academy course to football related courses at American universities.

Materials required: You will need to buy a football training kit form Newtown Football Club.
