Being a sport and exercise psychologist involves understanding how the thoughts, feelings, and behaviours of athletes and exercisers influence sport performance and exercise behaviours. This programme help you to learn:
Why pressure sometimes harms, but sometimes helps performance
How motivation affects how hard people train and how much they achieve
How coaches inspire optimal performance in athletes
How the world’s best athletes get over failure and mistakes to bounce back better.
Throughout the course, you will:
Grasp the complexity of sport performance and the crucial role that the mind plays in helping athletes produce optimal performance
Assess the psychological demands of high performance environments
Design and implement mental skills training with athletes of all levels and ages
Use physiological markers to determine underlying psychological states, particularly important in measuring athlete’s stress responses under pressure
Monitor exercise participation and understand the psychological determinants and implications of physical activity
Our Sport and Exercise Psychology degree is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS). This means that when you graduate you can claim Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC). When you graduate with us, you will have experienced what it is to be a sport and exercise psychologist, and will possess all that you need to pursue an amazing and rewarding career in sport.

During this course you’ll learn about mental skills training and counseling techniques. You’ll also spend time focusing on the interplay between the mind and physiological responses that influence performance.
You’ll test psychology theory and apply the results you find to athletes. In our dedicated sports and psychology facilities you will experience the realities of sports psychology practice. This gives you experience of the professional environment and allows you to sharpen your interpersonal skills.
We’ll also help you to develop soft skills, such as how to communicate with colleagues and clients effectively, time-management and decision-making.
