The aims of this module are for students to be introduced to topics, concepts and ways of thinking that require an integration of knowledge from different areas of sport and exercise science.
Anatomy and Physiology Core
Anatomy and Physiology
The aim of this module is to develop the students’ understanding of the structure, function and homeostatic regulation of the human body with reference to integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous, cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, urinary, immune, endocrine and reproductive systems.
Biochemistry and Cell Biology for Sport and Exercise Science Core
Biochemistry and Cell Biology for Sport and Exercise Science
The aims of this module are to further the understanding of: the major types of living cells together with an emphasis on subcellular organelles that are common and differentiating among cell types; subcellular structures within biological systems and the common relationships between structure and function; transfers of energy in chemical reactions and biochemical pathways including the role and kinetics of enzymes in these processes; energy transduction from chemical potential to biologically necessary work including energy flows vital for life that underpin future study of human nutrition, physical activity and exercise; the theoretical application of the principles and methods of practical cellular biology and biochemistry to experimental information.
Introduction to Sports Biomechanics and Kinesiology Core
Introduction to Sports Biomechanics and Kinesiology
The aims of this module are to develop students’ theoretical and practical understanding of the mechanics of human motion, especially as related to sporting performance; and the anatomical structures of the body and the ways that the muscular and skeletal systems interact during motion.
Year 2
In your second year your choice of options enables you to the tailor the course towards your own interests and aspirations. There are compulsory modules to develop research and professional skills.
Research Methods Core
Research Methods
The aims of this module are to further students’ understanding of qualitative and quantitative research design and to enable them to be effective independent researchers. The module will enable students to develop a critical understanding and appreciation of the various research philosophies, methods and analyses utilised within sport-related research.
Integrated Professional and Applied Skills 2 Core
Integrated Professional and Applied Skills 2
The aims of this module are for students to: 1. work with real-world multi-disciplinary or interdisciplinary issues, topics and themes;2. strengthen the context and application of knowledge, skills and insight acquired across sport and exercise science modules;3. engage in self-reflection and their own career development, in preparation for future employment (and Industrial Placement, where applicable).
Current Themes in Sport and Exercise Psychology Optional
Current Themes in Sport and Exercise Psychology
The aim of this module is to develop students understanding of key theoretical perspectives that explain sport and exercise behaviour.
Expert Performance in Sport Optional
Expert Performance in Sport
The aim of this module is to further students’ understanding of the major theories and factors underpinning the psychology of sport expertise.
Physiology of Exercise and Training Optional
Physiology of Exercise and Training
The aim of this module is to further students’ understanding of the acute physiological responses to exercise and chronic physiological adaptations to exercise and training in humans and how these responses are regulated together with the influence of environmental factors and fatigue on physiological processes. A further aim is to develop students’ practical laboratory/experimental skills in human and exercise physiology.
Biochemistry of Exercise and Nutrition Optional
Biochemistry of Exercise and Nutrition
The aim of this module is to further students’ theoretical and practical understanding of the biochemical processes during exercise and recovery, and the influence and exercise and nutritional supplementation on the cellular and molecular processes which govern adaptive responses to training.
Biomechanics of Sport Optional
Biomechanics of Sport
The aims of this module are to further students’ understanding of the mechanical principles governing human movement, and of the mathematical modelling of sports movement and biomechanical data acquisition techniques and their use in the mechanical analysis of sports movements.
