About this course
You will generally need 4 relevant GCSE's at Grade C or above, or an appropriate NVQ level 2, BTEC First diploma or Intermediate GNVQ with a satisfactory grade. Mature students are welcome to apply without formal qualifications but subject to a satisfactory interview and the outcome of initial guidance.

Mature students are welcome to apply without formal qualifications but subject to a satisfactory interview and the outcome of initial guidance.
What will I study? To obtain a National Diploma you will study 18 units (over 2 years). The core units will comprise: The Body in Action, Training and Fitness in Sport, Sports Development, Fitness Testing for Sport & Exercise, Health and Safety in Sport, Sports Coaching and Practical Team Sports The specialist units will comprise: Exercise, Health and Lifestyle, Leadership in Sport, Sports Massage, Psychology for Sports Performance, Ledership in Sport, Work-based Experience in Sport, Sport and Society, Sports Nutrition, Sports Injuries, Sport as a Business, Reflective Practitioner and Organising a Sports Event.
What else will I do? A range of industry related qualifications e.g. Community Sport Leader Award L2 & L3, Award in Sport Coaching, Tag Rugby Leaders Award, Dragon Sports Leaders Award Football Leaders Award, HSE Basic First Aid Certificate. A range of keys skills and GCSE re-sits in Maths and/or English are also studied.
How will I be assessed? You will be assessed through a range of projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands.
What will I achieve? BTEC National Diploma in Sport (Development, Coaching and Fitness) - 18 units - this is equivalent to 3 A levels. Or if you wish to study part-time a BTEC National Certificate in Sport (Development and Fitness) - 12 units over 2 years - equivalent to 2 A levels. Or BTEC National Award in Sport (Development, Coaching and Fitness) - 6 units over 1 or 2 years - this is equivalent to 1 A levels.
What can I do afterwards? Progress directly into work or onto a full-time higher education course. There are a number of diverse job opportunities locally,nationally and internationally including Sports Centres, Fitness Centres, Outdoor Activity Centres and Sports Development and Coaching with local authorities. If you decide to go to university you could take a degree or HND in subjects such as Sports Studies, Leisure Management, Sport Science, Sport and Physical Education or Teacher Training. Recently a number of learners decided to pursue a specialist degree at an American university.
Materials required: You will need to purchase a Coleg Powys tracksuit, short, polo shirt, kit bag and text book. All learners are encouraged to take advantage of visits that are arranged during the course and require learner funding.
Additional information about this course: Each Wednesday afternoon all learners are able to use the facillities at Maldwyn Leisure Centre and a number of teams and sporting leagues are arranged by the college.
