Sport is a truly global and rapidly expanding industry, that uniquely unites commercial, public and third-sector stakeholders. As such, there are exciting opportunities for graduates with an understanding of the complex and varied sports industry, its policy, governance and economic environment, combined with knowledge of business, finance and management.
Our Sports Management degree is co-taught by the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences (currently ranked 1st in the world for sport-related subjects) and the School of Business and Economics (one of the UK's leading business schools) to equip you with vital skills in marketing, organisational management, and accounting, as well as providing a through grounding in both the key strategic challenges facing sport, and the impact of sport, through sport governance, sport policy, sport marketing and sport economics.

Your first year at Loughborough will introduce you to material and concepts that provide a foundation for your subsequent study. You will study compulsory modules in Research, Employability and Academic Skills, as well an Introduction to Sport Management module. You will also cover the key management subjects of accounting, marketing, economics and organisations. An introduction to the wider social impacts of sport is provided through a compulsory module covering critical perspectives in sport. You will also select one optional module in either coaching or social science.

The aim of this module is to demonstrate the concepts and theories of microeconomics with applications to the sports and leisure sectors.

This module aims to introduce the preparation and interpretation of financial reports, to develop students’ analytical and written presentational skills and to show the relationship between business context and financial reporting.

The aims of this module are to support students’ transition into and progression through university education by developing the core academic and vocational knowledge and skills required for their programme and future career; and to introduce students to qualitative and quantitative research methods.

The aim of this module is to introduce students to some of the key issues and contemporary debates that are relevant to sports managers within the complex social, political, financial, and increasingly globalised environment within which they work as well as to relevant theoretical concepts that aid the understanding of such issues and debates.

Fundamentals of Sport Coaching

The aims of this module are for students to develop a holistic understanding of coaching and coaching practice, and to introduce students to evidence-based research and research-informed practice.

Sport and Social Sciences Optional

Sport and Social Sciences

The aim of this module is for students to develop knowledge and understanding of the underlying social science theories and topical debates that relate to sport, coaching and pedagogy.

Your second year comprises compulsory modules in Research Methods and Sport Management in Practice. You will also study compulsory modules covering law, equity and inclusion, marketing and economics, accounting and human resource management. You will select one optional module in either coaching or social sciences.

Human Resource Management in Sports Organisation

The aims of this module are: to examine critically the role of the Human Resource Management (HRM) function within the contemporary organisation; to develop a clear understanding of the role of the HRM function in maintaining an equitable relationship between employer and employee.

Coaching Process and Practice Optional

Coaching Process and Practice

The aims of this module are for students to examine coaching effectiveness and the complexity of the coaching process and to be able to apply and demonstrate this theoretical knowledge in practice in authentic coaching contexts.

Conceptualising Sport

The aim of this module is to develop a critical understanding of more advanced social scientific concepts which combine to form the basis of social theories and perspectives used in the analysis of sport and physical cultures in modern societies across the world.

Physical Activity and Health

The aim of this module is for students to develop knowledge and understanding of physical activity and sedentary behaviour and their relationship with health, including measurement of the behaviours, correlates/determinants and settings for promotion of the behaviours.

The aim of this module is for students to develop an understanding of the philosophical and methodological underpinnings of the research process and to gain experience of formulating appropriate research questions, research designs and proposals for conducting research in sport, coaching, physical education and management.

The aims of this module are to prepare students for a career in sports business and management by developing and enabling them to apply their business knowledge, skills and attributes to practical management activities and to enhance their self-awareness, personal development and general transferable skills appropriate to graduate careers both within and beyond sports management in the global workplace.

Sports Law, Equity and Inclusion Core

Sports Law, Equity and Inclusion

This module aims to develop an understanding of the legal principles underpinning sports law and its practice, and related issues of equity, inclusion and discrimination in sports.

In your final year you will undertake a compulsory dissertation in your chosen area of sport management. In completing your dissertation you will apply your research methods knowledge and draw on your experience of sport management concepts and knowledge learnt through your studies, your placements and other networks you have engaged with. You will study modules that critically explore the policy and governance of sport, its marketing and economics, and the strategic management of both events and organisations. You will also continue with an optional module in either coaching, or social sciences consistent with your choice in year 2.

The overall aim of this module is for students to develop a systematic and critical understanding of UK and global sport markets, from both a strategic marketing and economic perspective, including consideration of the organisation, strategic application of marketing and communications in commercial and non-commercialised sport, society and policy, and the economic nature and evaluation of the markets for sport.
