Description of Major
The program in Risk Management/Insurance permits the student to specialize in insurance-related studies. The field of insurance offers the student challenging work and diverse opportunities for non-sales careers of many types as well as providing protection to individuals, groups and industry. The program emphasizes corporate insurance and related products. The Risk Management/ Insurance degree program is designed to meet the academic needs of the professional insurance and risk management practitioner. The objective of the curriculum in risk and insurance is to acquaint the student with the effects of risk and uncertainty upon business and society. The analysis of risk and the methods of meeting risk are placed in proper perspective as parts of a broad business management curriculum.

In the first two years at FSU, students should take courses to complete the following: General Education requirements, Multicultural Course requirements, and Prerequisite Coursework requirements. Some courses may fulfill requirements in multiple areas. Electives in the first two years should focus on gaining additional exposure to the social and behavioral sciences, and on improving communication and analytical reasoning skills.

Admission to the limited access business programs requires the following:
1) completion of at least 52 semester hours;
2) a cumulative grade point average on all college work attempted of at least 2.90; and
3) satisfactory completion of all required prerequisite coursework.

Major Program of Studies at FSU: (49-52 hours depending on if CGS 2518 was taken as a prerequisite course or not)
Courses taken at a Community College may not be substituted for 3000/4000 level courses.

Lower-Division Requirements (4 hours)
These courses are Term 5 milestones. Transfer students must complete them in their first term of enrollment at FSU.

Major Area Requirements for Risk Management/Insurance Majors (18 hours)
All risk management/insurance majors must complete the six courses listed below. A grade of C minus or better must be earned in each course used to satisfy the risk management/insurance major area requirements.

RMI 4115 (3) Life and Health Insurance Products
RMI 4224 (3) Property and Casualty Insurance Products
RMI 4292 (3) Property and Casualty Insurance Operations
RMI 4347 (3) Commercial Risk Management

Plus two (2) electives from the following list of courses:

Computer Skills Competency: (0 hours beyond prerequisites) CGS 2100 (3) and/or CGS 2518 (3).
Either may be taken for admission. CGS2518 is a required course for graduation in the RMI major.


Oral Communication Competency: (0 beyond major requirements)
Students must demonstrate the ability to orally transmit ideas and information clearly. Business majors complete GEB 3213.
