Prior to commencing clinical placement hours you will need an up to date First Aid Certificate. If you do not have these you can take these courses throughout the year at our Allianz Park site, at an additional cost.

Course programme

Course content

This course will provide you with advanced knowledge of the anatomical and pathophysiological concepts in the assessment and treatment of injury in the sport/exercise rehabilitation field.

You will gain the skills to critically evaluate, analyse, interpret and apply current and alternative approaches in sport’s medicine, in the evaluation and treatment of injury. In addition, you will use this evidence to design and implement treatment/rehabilitation programmes.

You will also develop the ability to work as an advanced independent practitioner and as part of a professional multidisciplinary sports’ medicine team.

Modules

Advanced Anatomy and Client Assessment (15 Credits)

This module aims to develop an advanced knowledge of and mastery in the student’s understanding of anatomy with particular focus on structure and function. The module will concentrate upon in depth knowledge of how structure affects the function of the musculoskeletal system and the advanced methods by which a health practitioner assesses both the injured and non injured person. Advanced skills in terms of assessment, clinical reasoning and professional conduct will be developed alongside the theoretical bases.

Rehabilitation and Conditioning Techniques (15 Credits)

This module aims to provide the students with the ability to critically assess movement impairment and injury and develop validated corrective performance programmes based on their findings. Students will develop a range of corrective exercise techniques that looks to address the issues highlighted by the screening processes, as well as enhance performance through advanced prinicples of programming. This module also looks to include supplementary techniques to exercise in order to correct muscle imbalance, correct dysfunction and enhance performance.

Advanced Player Management (15 Credits)

The aims of this module are to develop an advanced understanding of exercise and environmental physiology and apply this to the professional sporting environment as an advanced independent practitioner. In addition supporting modalities such as electrotherapy, cryotherapy, thermotherapy, nutrition, hydration and hydrotherapy will be introduced in developing the range of advanced clinical skills needed for an autonomous practitioner.

Patho-physiology and Mechanism of Musculoskeletal Injury (15 Credits)

To critically review and evaluate current ‘schools of thought related to the patho-physiological processes involved in musculoskeletal injury and healing. Students will analyse and interpret current research evidence related to the management and treatment on injury. In addition students will advance their anatomical knowledge base by looking at an advanced level at the mechanism of injury and the resulting cause and effect on the musculoskeletal system.

Professional Placement (30 Credits)

This module aims for students to apply knowledge from their other taught modules into practice, students are firstly placed into our student sports injury clinic that treats a range of patients including staff, students and general public, and when felt appropriate are able to go and gain experience at external placements in specialised areas.

You will be required to adopt a reflective and critical approach to your working practice and to promote a problem-solving approach in a work environment.

Research Methods (30 Credits)

This module will facilitate the student’s ability to construct and delivery integrated treatment and rehabilitation programming. Assist the students to develop a critical analysis of research pertaining to treatments and rehabilitation specific to injury rehabilitation.

Dissertation (60 Credits)

To support students to undertake research, with a focus appropriate to their programme and area of practice and building upon the research proposal formulated in SES4430. To create a peer learning community for students to critically support each other in the research process to provide guidance, additional to that provided by the students’ supervisors, on matters of ethical application, research methods, data collection, analysis and writing-up.
