Course Structure

The Level 3 Sports Massage course is divided into ten comprehensive modules.

Module 1 – Introduction - Basic Massage Techniques

1.1 Describe Petrissage briefly.

1.2 Define your understanding of Tapotement including Hacking.

1.3 Summarise your interpretation of fibrositis.

1.4 Identify superficial kneading massage and explain why the body should be covered for a period after massage treatment.

Module 2 - Specific Movement for Massage

2.1 Discuss what Cross Fibre massage is mainly effective on.

2.2 Describe how you would interpret Compression massage.

2.3 Summarise muscle stripping and its benefits.

2.4 Analyse mechanical massage showing the important advantages.

Module 3 - Contra-Indications to Massage

3.1 List the contra-indications to sports massage.

3.2 Discuss six instances when you would refer an injury for medical opinion and explain why.

3.3 Summarise why is it important to warm up before exercise and outline two effects warm up has on the body.

3.4 Define the benefits of ice treatment.

Module 4 - Sports Injury Massage

4.1 Describe the six rules for pre-sport massage.

4.2 Explain the benefits of post sport massage and give four of the rules.

4.3 Analyse what massage treatment you would use on a patient with Plantar Fasciitis.

4.4 Discuss what treatment would be beneficial to a sufferer of Tendonitis.

Module 5 - Massage of the Knee

5.1 Define symptoms and treatment of the following conditions:

  • Medial Ligament Strain
  • Cartilage Problems
  • Patella Tendonitis
  • Iliotibial Tract Pain

5.2 Evaluate Osgood Schlatters condition in brief.

Module 6 - Massage of the Leg

6.1 Analyse the procedure used when giving massage to the entire leg.

6.2 Identify the anterior and posterior muscles of the lower leg.

6.3 Summarise the hamstring muscles, where they are found, their functions and how you would treat them in case of an injury, with massage.

Module 7 - Massage of the Arm, Elbow and Wrist

7.1 Describe the biceps muscle and show how they are inserted into the radius and ulna.

7.2 Summarise Carpal Tunnel Syndrome describing what it is and how it can be treated.

7.3 Judge how injuries can occur to the Triceps muscles giving recommended treatment.

Module 8 - Massage of the Neck and Shoulders

8.1 Discuss procedures you would follow before starting any work around the neck area.

8.2 Analyse the two main muscles of the neck.

8.3 Explain the function of the Scalenus Muscle and indicate where it is found.

Module 9 - Massage of the Back and Buttock Area

9.1 Describe which other part of the body should be treated alongside lower back problems and give reasons.

9.2 List the five conditions to referral including instances other than muscular problems.

9.3 Analyse poor posture and give three treatments for deeper chronic injuries to a muscle.

9.4 Discuss Trigger Points.

Module 10 - Massage of the Chest and Abdomen

10.1 Discuss how the pectoral muscles are treated by the massage therapist.

10.2 Introduce the diaphragm and its importance in respiration.

10.3 Identify how you as a massage therapist would work on the diaphragm of a client.

10.4 Define how you would advertise your business.
