Description

  • Type

    Short course

The course starts with the basics of samples, populations, probability modelling and probability distributions, then covers significance tests and confidence intervals in a variety of situations, from the simplest case of a single mean to the more advanced cases of regression and analysis of variance. It also covers how to design experiments so that these methods can extract as much useful information as possible.

Course structure One course per year; 5 days duration per course. Lectures, including tutorial elements, and practicals using statistical software.
What you will learn

On completion the student should be able to (either with or without the use of statistical software):

  • Critically assess and calculate probabilities for the binomial, Poisson and normal distributions

  • Critically assess and execute significance tests and confidence intervals for means and variances in one-sample, two-sample, large sample and small sample cases
  • Critically assess and execute simple linear regression, one-way and two-way analysis of variance.
