Shorthand is someone who works in the field of shorthand, a tachograph fast writing method, which uses signs, abbreviations or symbols to represent letters, sounds, words or phrases. It was born with the aim of being able to write at the speed with which one speaks in order to immediately fix on paper all the information heard. Shorthand was probably already used in ancient Greece at the time of Xenophon, while its use by the Romans is widely attested: Marco Tullio Tirone, the secretary of Cicero, to transcribe the speeches of the latter had in fact invented those that later they were called Notae Tironianae, a system of about 4000 symbols that replaced the verbal roots or their final letters. According to Dio Cassius, Maecenas was the inventor of a shorthand system. This system was then adopted for several centuries until, after the 11th century, it almost completely fell into oblivion. Modern shorthand began towards the end of the sixteenth century and developed for about two centuries, especially in England, with the invention of various geometric-based languages: in particular the Taylor system, adapted to Italian by Emilio Amanti, but perfected by Filippo Delpino, who made it the first system widely used in Italy, albeit with its defects inherited from the English system of origin; followed by the more efficient Pitman system, also adapted to Italian by Giuseppe Francini and, in Malta, by Peter Paul De Cesare. There are many different methods and systems of shorthand: generally they replace the symbols of the Latin alphabet with signs that, due to their particular shapes, they can be reproduced more quickly, for example straight lines, circles, etc. Let's find out together!
