Our distance learning MSc Structural Molecular Biology provides you with a grounding in the structure of proteins, and the main techniques that are used to study protein structure.
Structural biology allows you to understand how macromolecules work at the atomic level of detail. This is important, particularly in designing drugs that act at the molecular level to affect macromolecules.
Increasingly, research uses a range of complementary biophysical and structural techniques to study protein-protein interactions. This requires that researchers have some understanding of what all these techniques can achieve. This programme is designed to give the theoretical background required to use this range of methods.
About this course
Graduates go on to careers in research, science writing, teaching and academia. The course is particularly suitable for staff already working in industry as graduates, to enlarge their theoretical background and to complement their practical experience. Possible professions include higher education lecturer, research scientist, or science writer. This degree can also be useful in becoming a secondary school teacher or physical scientist.
A second-class honours degree (2:2) or above in science, computing or mathematics, or equivalent qualification, or relevant work experience.
Applications are reviewed on their individual merits and your professional qualifications and/or relevant work experience will be taken into consideration positively. We actively support and encourage applications from mature learners.

Course programme
You must successfully complete modules worth 180 credits.
You take two 30-credit modules in each year and complete a 60-credit project over two summers; we also offer a three-year programme in which you normally complete the project in Year 3. The project can either be purely web based or involve coming to Birkbeck for a two-week laboratory session, along with planning and write-up.
Please note you may take any four of the option modules but not all three of Protein Structure Determination, Protein Crystallography and Macromolecular and Cellular Electron Microscopy. For advice on module selection please contact the course tutor.
Alternatively you may graduate with one of the following Postgraduate Certificates by taking two 30-credit modules:
- Postgraduate Certificate in Protein Crystallography: Protein Crystallography plus one other module
- Postgraduate Certificate in Macromolecular Electron Microscopy: Macromolecular and Cellular Electron Microscopy plus one other module
- Postgraduate Certificate in Structural Molecular Biology: any two modules
A Postgraduate Diploma in Structural Molecular Biology can be awarded for any completed 120 credits.
OPTION MODULES- Macromolecular and Cellular Electron Microscopy
- Principles of Protein Structure
- Protein Bioinformatics
- Protein Crystallography
- Protein Expression, Purification and Biophysical Characterisation
- Protein Structure Determination
- Laboratory Project Structural Molecular Biology
- Project Structural Molecular Biology
