This course is for students who are looking to explore the architecture and urban planning of London through learning about its history as well as by designing an architectural intervention in the city. The course assists you in understanding the key phases of London's architectural, economic and social development through a series of informal seminars as well as guided site visit, design office and exhibition visits. This research will provide a stimulating background for individual and collaborative design work

Course programme

Topics covered

You will observe and record particular buildings, places and situations in London through photography, model making and drawing both on site and in the classroom.

Your individual observations of key themes and areas of interest in London’s current and past development will form the basis for a series of proposals in the form of maps.

  • Week 1: Exploring
Discovering London's built environment. Informal seminars on Londons waterways, planning and development, contemporary architecture in East London. Research and sketchbook work to lead into project work.

  • Week 2: Designing

Project brief, individual design development in sketches, drawing and model-making. Guest lectures, guided visits to sites, exhibitions and architecture offices throughout

  • Week 3: Making/Presenting

Continued project work, building urban intervention structure. Installation and documentation of urban intervention. Presentation of documentation in event space. Guest lectures, guided visits to sites, exhibitions and architecture offices throughout.

Who should take this course?

The course is open to students with varying experience and will help those looking to study Architecture, History of Architecture, Art and Design. Students will build a deeper understanding and working knowledge of contemporary architectural practice as well as a sound introduction to appreciating architecture in context to history.
