Summer Study Abroad - London Theatre: Behind the Scenes

Through practical workshops, visits, backstage tours, discussion groups and performances, this course offers you the opportunity to engage with theatrical London through an intensive three week programme.

From the historic Globe Theatre and the Royal National Theatre, to the innovative and radical Royal Court Theatre, London offers a huge range and variety of performance spaces.

You will be based at Wimbledon College of Arts, a specialist art college with theatre as one of its' key subject areas.

Responding to a brief, you will develop a concept and visually communicate your ideas. You will learn about the technical and creative processes involved in theatre, including costume, set design, lighting and props.

Your learning will be enhanced by attending five theatre performances which will be documented through a performance blog and contextualised in group seminars.

This course will provide you with:

• An insight into the wide range of cultural and performance offerings London provides. You will record your thoughts and impressions of the performances and cultural spaces you visit in a Reflective Journal or blog.
• An opportunity to participate in group discussion and be able to articulate your views on your visits and experiences. You will also offer questions and responses in the discussion of the opinions of other group members.
• A ‘hands on’ introduction to various creative design processes – such as model making, costume design and 3D making techniques.
• An opportunity to tailor your own mini design project and design and make a piece of work which will feature in an end of course exhibition.

London Theatre: Behind the Scenes is an intense course with teaching taking place between 10.00 and 16.00 most days and some performances in the evenings, although there will be some time for self-directed study.
