The CACHE Advanced Level Apprenticeship is designed for learning support staff with a working role which requires competence in a specialist area and/or across a varied range of responsibilities. They will be working under the direction of a teacher who has overall responsibility for teaching and learning in the classroom. They will contribute to planning, implementing and evaluating learning activities and will work alongside the teacher to support whole class activities, as well as working on their own with individual, or groups of, pupils. Job titles may include: teaching assistant; classroom assistant; learning support assistant; additional needs assistant; pastoral/welfare support assistant; bilingual support assistant; foundation stage assistant; learning guide; learning coach; induction mentor; team leader.

About this course


Candidates should have a strong interest in the area of working with children to support their learning, and development. They will need to be dedicated and committed to their study and be responsible for their own learning. Students on this course are required to be in a school setting . Additional entry requirements include being educated to GCSE level.

What will I learn?
CACHE Advanced Level Apprenticeship for Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools units:

The course combines developing your practical and theoretical skills at College, together with experience gained in the workplace. The course covers:



  • Child and young person development

  • Safeguarding the welfare of children and young people

  • Communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults

  • Equality, diversity and inclusion in work with children and young people

  • Employment Rights and Responsibilities

  • Functional Skills at Level 1 in English, Maths and ICT


Which award will I achieve?


CACHE Level 3 Diploma in Specialist Support for Teaching and Learning in Schools (QCF), ERR Workbook (employment rights and responsibilities), Level 2 English, Mathematics and ICT Functional Skills/GCSE


How will I be assessed?


The above modules will be assessed practically and through written assessments. This is a practical course where students are expected to provide evidence through classroom activity, guided assignment work, practical sessions and workplace experience.



What are the entry requirements?

What next?

Possible progression to higher level courses such as the Access to Higher Education Diploma. Higher education opportunities may include the Foundation Degree in Health and Social Care at Colchester Institute, a Degree or Level 5 Care Leadership and Management. Following further training and development, possible progression to a teacher training programme.

but note that you will need to do some research to find an employer willing to take you on as an apprentice
if you do not already have one.
