Course programme
You will attend classes at the College one day a week, studying a number of units that cover the theoretical aspects underpinning the goals of the course. The units include: Safeguarding the Wellbeing of Children and Young People; Communication and Professional Relationships with Children and Young People; Schools as Organisations; Supporting Learning Activities; Promoting Positive Behaviour in Children and Young People; and Promoting Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Work with Children and Young People. An assessor will visit you at work and observe your interactions with children and staff. You will be asked about the way you approach your job and why. This will allow you to demonstrate the knowledge and understanding you have gained in class. You will also collect a portfolio of your activities in your workplace.
You will need to be working or volunteering in a school environment (for at least 16 hours a week). You will also need an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check which costs approximately £50.
Assessment is by in-class work, your portfolio, and the results of your observation by the assessor.
This Level 3 Certificate is a good basis from which to progress to a Level 3 Diploma in a Teaching and Learning-related subject, or an Access to Higher Education course. It also opens up opportunities for a career in Teaching, Youth Work, Child Care and Education Welfare.
