Course programme

The NVQ Supporting Teaching and Learning (Levels 2 and 3) courses are for those who would like to work in a primary, special school or secondary school as a teaching assistant, supporting the teacher paid or unpaid. It aims to provide skilled and qualified workers; in addition, this would enhance the candidate's credibility and prospects for future employment.

NVQ Level 2

The Level 2 NVQ Teaching Assistants course is a seven unit qualification. Five of these are mandatory with the remaining two optional and can be selected from a list of units depending upon the setting you are working within.

Each week consists of a 3 hour tutorial session at the Heritage Centre with an additional one day (or two 1/2 days) in a primary or secondary school classroom environment. This course is approximately 30 weeks.

In addition to the training workshops, candidates will be given short assignments and various mini-projects to complete. They will be expected to put into practice in their placements, all that they have learnt in the sessions. Candidates will be assessed in the workplace by an assessor and will be given advice on how to complete a portfolio of evidence for the NVQ.

Method of Delivery and Assessment

You will be required to attend childcare tutuorials one day/evening per week, and where possible attend for some basic IT training. Students must be able to complete an extended period of work placement which is a mandatory element of the course.
