You will be attending college for one day per week and working in your placement school for two days per week. Whether in the classroom or on placement, you will be developing the knowledge and skills needed when supporting teaching and learning in schools. You will cover a wide range of areas including children and young people’s development, supporting those with disabilities or special educational needs and communication and professional relationships. You will carry out lots of different activities in class, working in groups and individually, looking at case studies and making links between what you learn at college and what you experience on placement.

Entry Requirements

Entry requirement includes a confirmation letter of 12 hours placement per week for the duration of the course within an school setting. You will need to have a minimum functional skills level 1 in literacy and numeracy. Complete Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks will be required. The full time 16-18 & HE courses cover DBS as part of the induction. Learners must be 19 years and over.

Delivery and Assessment

There are no tests or exams. Instead you will be assessed in your placement school, and by completing assignments. You will be allocated an assessor who will assess your knowledge by direct observation of your practice and through professional discussion. You will also need to demonstrate reflection on your own practice in real work situations. Written assignments will include your own development plans and written records of your skills and knowledge. We will support you in developing your ICT skills by completing an electronic portfolio of your work and placement evidence.

Progression

After completing your Certificate, you may want to progress to the Level 3 Certificate or Diploma course. Alternatively, you might want to seek employment as a teaching assistant – our programmes provide excellent prospects for employment in schools.
