About this course
There is increasing emphasis across surgical specialties on sound education, assessment and appraisal, and a growing recognition that education is key to safe clinical practice and effective professional development. Surgery with its professional emphasis on craft, performance and teamwork presents unique opportunities and challenges to educators and trainers. The MEd and PG Diploma in Surgical Education programmes aim to challenge your thinking and develop your practice as a surgical educator. Successful completion of the programmes will develop your theoretical and practical understanding of surgical education and the judgment needed to innovate in this important and growing field. The face-to-face nature of the course enables active discussion with peers and tutors and fosters a collaborative community atmosphere in which to develop your educational interests. These programmes are of interest to those involved with the education of students and trainees in interventional and surgical specialties. Although we expect participants to bring relevant experience of medicine, surgery, and training in the workplace, we make few assumptions of prior knowledge in the field of education.
All applicants must apply online. You can usually apply for up to two courses, although your second choice will only be considered if your first-choice application is unsuccessful. Most courses don't have a formal closing date, but popular courses close when they are full, so you should apply early to avoid disappointment. There may also be funding deadlines that apply to you. You will need to upload documents with your applications, which may include transcripts and degree...

Modules shown are for the current academic year, and are subject to change depending on your year of entry.
The MEd qualification consists of eight modules (Modules 1–8), completed in full or part-time study mode. Full-time study mode is only suitable for students taking a year away from employment.
The PG Diploma consists of Modules 1–7, is available in part-time study mode only, and takes ten months of sustained and intensive study from October to July.
The programmes are based upon five intensive and one-week long taught modules with further private study for module preparation, coursework and assessment. The modules consist of:
- Module 1 – Policy and context of surgical education
- Module 2 – Introduction to learning and teaching
- Module 3 – Introduction to assessment and appraisal
- Module 4 – Introduction to simulation and technology enhanced learning
- Module 5 – Theory and practice of learning, teaching and assessment
Modules 1–5 typically have coursework during the module that is carried out in small groups. Modules are assessed by varying forms of extended writing.
- Module 6a/b – Surgical Education Specialty Stream and Design Project
This module provides an opportunity for students to study an area of interest (e.g. simulation, engagement) at greater depth. The module includes individual study, face-to-face teaching and assessment in the form of a supervised design project.
- Module 7 – Reflection for Surgical Education Project
Those students either progressing from the PG Diploma to the MEd, or taking the MEd in full-time study mode, also will complete:
