Course programme

Course Delivery:

This qualification provides the ‘technical component’ primarily intended for the Level 2 Sustainable Waste Management Apprenticeship. The structure of the qualification has been designed to enable complete flexibility across the sustainable recycling roles at an ‘operational’ level.

The qualifications aim is to develop occupational competence in a wide range of job roles in the collection, transfer, treatment and final disposal of waste and resources and to provide a structured route to job competence and career progression.

This qualification covers:

  • Environmental good practice
  • H&S processes and procedures
  • Plant and equipment
  • Reception, movement and dispatch of materials
  • Manual handling
  • Communication with public
  • Teamwork and relationship with colleagues
  • Security

To achieve this qualification a learner must complete all of the mandatory units (five units totalling 22 credits):

  • Promote sustainability and environmental good practice in the recycling industry
  • Develop relationships with colleagues and others
  • Comply with health and safety processes and procedures in the workplace
  • Encourage recycling services through promotion
  • Develop personal performance

Learners can then choose either the general route or one of the four possible pathways: collection, reception and segregation, processing, WEEE. The minimum total number of credits required to achieve the qualification is 37. If learners choose a specific pathway the title of the pathway group will appear in their final certificate.

An assessor will visit the candidate’s workplace to observe their work ‘on-the-job’. The candidate will compile a ‘portfolio of evidence’ which will demonstrate that they have the knowledge and competence necessary to meet the standard set in the qualification.
