The aims of this module are to:
enable students to critically examine and explore issues centred on a range of symptoms which occur during both palliative and end of life phases of an illness utilising personal and clinical experiences supported by theoretical and research based evidence.
develop problem solving and critical reasoning skills by adopting a problem based learning approach involving small group work and the development of an autonomous approach to self study. To propose developments for the enhancement of symptom management within their clinical practice for patients requiring palliative/end of life care
Key lectures will provide students with the opportunity to acquire knowledge related to symptom management & how this relates to students` professional roles.
Seminars, group discussions and tutorials will be used to facilitate individual and group learning focused on synthesising subject knowledge and applying this to students own roles and services, examining how multi-agency and multi-professional support works to assess and manage referrals and care.
Directed study provides students with the opportunity to consolidate and apply the principles to their areas of practice.

Course programme
The modules for this course can be found in the latest programme specification.
This module is provided as part of this interdisciplinary Framework within the Faculty of Health Studies. The Framework enables students to create an individualised programme of study that will meet either their needs and/or the employers’ needs for a changing diverse workforce within a modern organisation.
The modules and academic awards are presented in areas representing employment practice or work based or clinical disciplines.
Whilst some students can build their own academic awards by choosing their own menu of module options, other students will opt for a named academic award. The Framework also provides the option for students to move from their chosen named award to another award if their job or personal circumstances change and they need to alter the focus of their studies. The majority of named awards also offer students, the option of choosing at least one module, sometimes more, from across the Faculty module catalogue enabling them to shape their award more specifically to their needs.
