MSc in System Level Integration
Distance Learning
Master's level modules plus some supplementary specialist courses are provided by the Institute's MSc in System Level Integration by distance learning which may be taken on a standalone, continuing professional development basis by design engineers seeking to improve their skills and experience.
Remote students work independently, at their own pace following course material provided via the internet allowing them to conveniently accommodate their skill-development needs around employment and personal commitments.
Material is delivered via Open Source "Moodle" Web based interface which also allows interactive email discussion with personal tutors supplied by iSLI and our collaborators.
A certificate of attendance is provided at the end of each module for engineers studying on a CPD basis. Credits from the successful completion of the entire module may be awarded retrospectively should anyone studying on a CPD basis wish to matriculate and work towards an accredited qualification such as a postgraduate certificate, diploma or MSc.
The electronics industry is undergoing significant technical change requiring ongoing professional development on the part of even highly skilled engineers. The Institute has addressed these demands through the introduction of the MSc in System Level Integration by distance learning.
The MSc by distance learning concentrates on the understanding the process of SoC (Security operations center)design, the use of IP blocks and the architecture of modern electronic systems. The curriculum provides an opportunity to acquire advanced skills in hardware engineering, embedded software and systems architecture.
Programme of Study
Distance learning is designed as a flexible form of the current full- and part-time MSc programme, and is subject to the same stringent quality assurance procedures. Credits accumulated from modules may contribute toward a postgraduate award approved by the University of Edinburgh. Modules may also be taken on a standalone basis for continuing professional development.
Overview
The programme delivers high quality, well supported and flexible SoC teaching, allowing students to accommodate their skill-development needs around employment and personal commitments.
Modules are web-based, with each course organised into a number of study units. A study unit typically features the main learning text, questions and answers and practical exercises. In addition, each course features tutor marked assignments and an exam.
Some modules have a residential component where students may be required to attend iSLI or a partner institution worldwide. Modules are planned and structured to help students pace their learning.
Coursework & Exams
Each module is assessed by a combination of coursework and exam (normally 40% coursework and 60% exam).
Tutor support is provided by specialists from iSLI and partner universities, and is delivered by email, fax and phone. In addition, students benefit from the facilities of Moodle, an online education environment providing virtual classrooms, allowing students to interact with their peers and communicate with course tutors.
