Course programme

The full course consists of four one day workshops. Each can be undertaken as a stand alone workshop, but full benefit will only be gained from attending all four. Students can start the course at any stage and work their way through all workshops at their own pace and in any order. All four workshops must be completed in order to gain the Canine Carer Certificate.

As with all Talking Dogs workshops, delegates are invited to participate and respond to the video clips, group exercises and feedback that form the backbone of this event.

Syllabus

Safe & Defensive Handling
The essence of defensive handling is not getting bitten! But how do you actually do that? Instead of hoping that your natural survival instinct will kick in, this workshop is designed to give you the tools to identify when, how and why you might be bitten; understand and practise effective, tried and tested techniques; and learn which piece of equipment can help you best in those tricky situations.

Assessments
This workshop concentrates on investigating a variety of assessment techniques in order to help carers identify issues, prevent problems and successfully match dogs with new owners. Assessment is about gathering objective, predictive, relevant information rather than letting inexperienced, uninformed and vulnerable new owners take chances with their new companions.

Behaviour problems
Behaviour modification is a combination of skill, knowledge and experience. This becomes even more challenging when the dog is without a dedicated owner, living in a kennel environment and the trainer is limited by both time and resources. This one day workshop aims to help address some of the behavioural issues for shelter dogs using effective, practical and tried & tested methods.

Practical rehoming
Maintaining dogs’ physical, mental and emotional wellbeing in kennels is essential for successful rehoming. Combine this with improving the dog through training and behaviour to help new owners see shelter dogs as potential pets and you have a great recipe for reducing returns and finding the perfect match for dog and owner.

The fee includes all day refreshments, lunch, and course support pack.
