What You’ll Learn

This is a combination week consisting of training in Tanking and Floor Screeding. This course will ensure that as Tilers, you can apply waterproofing (Tanking) to showers and wet-rooms etc before applying tiles to the area and when working in areas with uneven floors, you can apply levelling techniques to develop a flat and even surface ready for tiling. With these additional skills, you will be able to complete all aspects of any job that you take on, offer a wider range of skills and save time and money by not having to call in someone else to cover these areas.

How You’ll Learn

This is a practical course and you will cover:

Floor Screeding

  • Calculating the quantities of materials required
  • Gauging and mixing of screeding materials
  • Transferring datum levels
  • Preparing background areas, brushed and bonded
  • Positioning screeding battens/screeds
  • Laying and finishing floor screeds level and to falls
  • Incorporating drainage inlets

Additionally you will mix and lay self-leveling compounds which will include:

  • Preparing background areas
  • Calculating the quantities of materials required
  • Mixing of materials
  • Laying self-leveling compounds including removal of any air trapped in the mix
  • Explain screeding equipment, laser levels, and tools required to complete the work competently and accurately

Tanking

Tiling in wet areas such as shower cubicles can often be problematic as there is always an element of doubt that if you apply your tiles onto plasterboard or marine ply board in wet areas, that you could encounter a failed tiled installation, in other words, the tiles may fall off after a short period of time costing you financially for the repair.

Tanking is used to create a non-permeable membrane between your tiles and the surface substrate and this Tanking course will show you how to eliminate any problems you have encountered previously. We will show you how to apply specified tanking systems to these wet areas (prior to tiling) which will extinguish any doubt and ensure a tiled installation which will not fail.

We will go through the system of applying tanking systems from start to finish so that when you have completed your course at Able Skills you will be capable of tiling in wet areas with confidence.

Courses Open To You After

If you haven’t had any formal tiling training or you are already a Tiler but do not have any recognised qualifications, Able Skills can help as we have a variety of training options but equally, the facility to assess time served tillers to achieve NVQs.

Additional Info

You will also tile the area after having completed the tanking system so that you can see the finished article however this requires that you have some tiling background or that you have attended a tiling training course at Able Skills.

We have specific designated areas in order to complete these training courses; Tanking training areas are located within Able Skills dedicated Tiling Training Centre and areas for Floor Screeding can be found in both our Tiling and Plastering Training Centres.

These are hands-on, practical courses and you will be involved at every stage and will be participating throughout. It is therefore recommended you bring suitable clothing and for your own safety, steel capped footwear is essential.
