We offer a wide range of taught modules in the areas of research methods (four compulsory), TESOL (two compulsory), issues in education and professional development. On successful completion of the programme you will have made an original and independent contribution to educational knowledge in a TESOL-related area. You will, through your dissertation, demonstrate a critical evaluation of the relevant literature, a high level of competence in appropriate research methods, and the ability to communicate your results and their implications. About this course

A 2.2 Honours degree or above or equivalent qualification acceptable to the University and a Masters degree or equivalent qualification acceptable to the University. Performance profiles (grades etc) may also be required to ensure suitability of the applicant for Doctoral study. Course programme

Course Details

The EdD (TESOL) programme may be taken on a part-time or full-time basis.

The programme comprises nine taught doctoral modules (270 credits, of which four must be research modules and two TESOL modules) and a research dissertation (270 credits). The dissertation has the same level of challenge and high standards as a PhD but is approximately half the scale (40,000 words) and is assessed by an oral examination (a viva-voce).

There are three stages to each taught module which covers a four month period:

  • pre-reading;
  • attendance for the intensive teaching, normally over a consecutive period of two and a half days; and
  • the completion and submission of an assignment, normally within three months of the last date of the taught module. Each module is assessed by one 5,000 word assignment.

All students must take the following research modules:

  • Qualitative Research: Methods, Data and Theory
  • Quantitative Research: Methods, Data and Theory

Plus one other research module from:

  • Experimental Methods in Educational Research
  • Narrative and Arts-Based Research Approaches
  • Philosophical and Ethical Issues in Educational Research
  • Researching Children and Young People in Educational Settings
  • Survey Methods in Educational Research
  • The Professional as Researcher

Plus two TESOL modules:

  • TESOL: Discourse and Pedagogy
  • TESOL: Issues in Language Learning

Optional modules:

  • Assessment and Testing: Concepts and Issues
  • Children's Rights - Research and Practice
  • Critical Perspectives on Early Childhood
  • Education in Divided Societies: Contribution to Social Cohesion
  • Educational Special Needs: Policy and Partnerships for Inclusion

Assessment & Feedback

Each module is assessed through an assignment equivalent to a maximum of 5,000 words. The final dissertation of 40,000 words is assessed by an oral examination (viva voce).

Learning and Teaching

Morning / Afternoon / Evening

The programme consists of a taught element and an independent research-related thesis. On successful completion students will have made an original and independent contribution to educational knowledge in the field determined by the topic of their research dissertation study, and demonstrate a critical evaluation of the relevant literature, a high level of competence in appropriate research methods, and the ability to communicate the results and their implications. Students must complete nine taught Doctoral modules (270 D points) and a research dissertation (270 D points) in a TESOL-related area. The research dissertation has the same level of challenge and high standards as a PhD but is approximately half the scale (40,000 words). Modules are usually taught over 2.5 days (Thurs to Sat).

Indicative Number of Modules per Semester
Full-time students: 2-3 modules per semester.
Part-time students: 1-2 modules per semester.
