Structure

Taught by highly skilled visiting professionals and dedicated staff, you will explore the creation of three-dimensional constructed images for the human form and its surrounding space within a range of performance contexts. The course is interdisciplinary and covers a broad spectrum: from masks to realistic prosthetic limbs; from armour fabrication to special effects costumes used on 'creature' films; from large carnival costumes to small stop-motion animation puppets.

You will develop a wide range of vocational skills, which include:

  • life sculpting
  • life drawing
  • casting and mould making
  • core moulds
  • vac forming
  • fabrication
  • polyester carving
  • applied pattern cutting
  • body padding
  • puppetry and introduction to animatronics
  • fibreglass
  • foam latex
  • hair replacement
  • silicon

Cultural Studies will introduce you to different perspectives of performing arts, visual and fashion imagery. Design is centred on the development of processes and ideas, including the interpretation of text into designs for film and theatre. Your understanding of technical effects for performance is deepened with the second year industry linked project. This includes work on film sets as well as work on theatre productions. In addition, the Performance Project in your third year showcases your ability against the expectations of a professional theatre environment and will showcase your work to potential employers.
