Technical Theatre HND (Level 4)
Course Content
This course is offered in partnership with Swansea Metropolitan University.
The programme is designed for those students who are seeking employment in the industry as technicians, designers, stage managers, production managers etc. The course gives you a broad range of skills in all of these disciplines.
Units studied include lighting design and operation, sound design and operation, workshop constructional skills, stage management, design, writing and presentation. You will work as a member of a team in managing and running the on-site performance venue, liaising and working with external companies, as well as for in-house productions.
As part of the Showcase Festival students have the opportunity to work in professional venues across Wales and in Dublin.
Volcano Theatre Company are artists in residence at Swansea Metropolitan University and a number of students have been selected to work with them on professional productions.
Students also have the opportunity to achieve certification on the PASMA course â€" the tower training certificate which is a professional industry standard and is valid for five years.
Teaching/Assessment
Students undertake practical workshops in all areas of technical theatre outlined above and also have seminars on relevant technical theory for such areas as lighting and sound, stage management and design.
Progression
Students who successfully complete the HND Technical Theatre are eligible for consideration for direct entry into the final year of the BA Performing Arts course where they can specialise in taking the technical elective route.
Career opportunities include technical theatre, lighting design, set design, backstage roles, stage management and production management.
