What will I Learn?
Course content is tailored to the nature of the business that the apprentice is employed in. Diploma Level 3 units may include:
- Assessing Risks
- Selecting and Using Safe Systems for Working at Height
- Getting In, Fitting Up and Getting Out
- Preparing and Assembling Rigging and De-rigging
- Developing and Refining Ideas for Sound
- Operating Sound for a Live Performance in the Theatre
- Preparing and Operating Special Effects for Live Performances
- Operating Sound for a Live Performance in the Theatre
- Running and Crewing an Ongoing Production
- Planning Lighting Requirements for a Production
- Preparing Drawings to Communicate Designs
- Setting Up and Checking Sound Equipment
As part of the Apprenticeship framework you will also study Employment Rights and Responsibilities, and Functional Skills Level 2/GCSEs in English and maths.
What are the entry requirements?
Successful completion of a relevant level 2 qualification.
What can I do next?
Career pathways may include lighting technician, senior electrician, console operator or maintenance technician. Following further training and development, possible progression to managerial roles. Higher Education opportunities may include the Foundation Degree or BA (Hons) in Technical Theatre at Colchester Institute.

Considering an apprenticeship?
Many young people look to an apprenticeship to gain valuable skills directly in the workplace.
You can apply for both an apprenticeship, and a full-time course as your back up,
but note that you will need to do some research to find an employer willing to take you on as an apprentice
if you do not already have one.

ensuring you complete section 4 of the form. In order to start your apprenticeship you must have an employer
ready to complete your apprenticeship with.
