This course offers a blend of technical expertise across the multi-faceted disciplines of drama and performance with work opportunities in professional venues. There will be opportunities for employment as student technicians in the Epstein Theatre, Liverpool and the Storyhouse Theatre, Chester. With its hands-on experiential learning, academic rigour and exploration of theory into practice, this course is ideal for those who wish to gain vocational skills with underpinning knowledge as well as those who wish to take a more academic approach to the study of theatre technology.

About this course

You will gain extensive vocational experience. You will have the opportunity to work across the performing arts in a technical role for which you will have developed specialist skills in technology for performance. You could go on to work as stage managers, production managers, in lighting or sound, or scenic design. Students will be skilled in the creative use of technology in a variety of performance contexts.

2018 Entry

BTEC Higher National Diploma (HND) or equivalent in a relevant subject.

Course programme

As a student of technical theatre:

  • You will increase your subject knowledge through learning about a wide range of contemporary practice, performance and theatre in a variety of regional, national and international contexts.
  • You will learn by ‘doing’ and you will receive support from experienced, well-qualified, specialist lecturing staff, administration and technical staff, and from visiting professionals.
  • You will have lots of opportunities to engage with current, employment-related professional practice and to enhance your career potential.
  • You will experience a wide variety of learning activities in theatre technologies and they will contribute to the development of your graduate attributes.

Teaching and learning will normally take place in a variety of continually evolving contexts, including an appropriate balance of the following kinds of activity:

a) Workshops, rehearsals, productions, practical classes, laboratory or studio-based practice, screenings, lectures, discussions (both online and in class), seminars, and tutorials. You will be encouraged to apply your knowledge and understanding of critical theory to case studies within regional, national and international contexts.

b) Group and individual learning;

c) Professional placements of varying types (which will be of especial relevance in enhancing your employability and ability to be enterprising);

d) Tutor-led, (peer-group) student-led, and self-directed study;

e) Use of subject-specific and generic technologies (these will be particularly helpful in the development of your digital literacy);

f) Resource-based learning, including library work and attendance at performances (this will be helpful in developing your digital literacy, enhancing your employability and ability to be enterprising, and increasing your awareness of global citizenship);

g) Opportunities to engage with the workplace, which might include extended placements at professional theatres

Learning activities in Theatre Technology will support your personal development, enable you to apply your learning to a range of different contexts, develop your understanding of how you might manage your future career, support your acquisition of subject-specific and generic skills, and help you to develop an understanding of how to deal with risk and uncertainty.
