Course programme
By studying documentary, you’ll find out more about yourself, your creative voice, how to research characters, and the building blocks of story. You’ll also take on a professional crew role in a studio environment as you study drama. Through these disciplines, and in particular though screenwriting, you’ll keep the idea of story at the centre of everything you do.
We’ll cover creative, technical and narrative skills, like sound, camera, lighting, and post-production - improving the production values of your projects and developing a range of highly valuable skills.
2nd Year
Building on the first year, you’ll get to specialise in areas of particular interest and develop your craft and content creation skills - specifically in documentary and drama - forming a basis for all other disciplines. With employability front and centre, you can tailor your experience to your career ambitions. We’ll also develop your critical thinking and research skills with a mix of integrated and stand-alone theory work.
You’ll have the chance to build your storytelling skills through practices like screenwriting and making, and undertake additional projects like branded content, commercials, music, sports, social media and online platforms. There’ll also be opportunities for live briefs, cross-course collaboration, work placements, studying abroad and possible paid internships.
3rd Year
With our support, you’ll choose your practice projects and your research topic. You can hone your skills toward a focused final portfolio, perhaps as a director or cinematographer. Or you can opt for a wider skill set, taking different roles across a number of projects, for example as a writer, director, producer, editor, sound designer, cinematographer, or any other combination. You’ll even work with industry mentors for your final practical output.
You can produce an extended piece of academic writing around your chosen research topic, which is typically a dissertation, but it may also be possible to negotiate other assessment methods.
Sales, distribution and marketing feature more heavily in the final year, where you’ll learn to better understand your audience and help your projects succeed. You’ll also learn to present and pitch yourself as a creative practitioner in and outside the evolving film and television industries.
