Description
Students study six modules, three in German and three in English Language and TESOL.
In German:
In the first year all students follow a language module which builds on your knowledge of spoken and written German and a module on German culture designed to introduce you to the rich diversity of film, literature and history of Germany. There are optional modules on German for Professional Purposes, European Cinema and Fiction. You can also study German as a beginner.
In the second and final year you continue to develop your language skills and choose from optional modules such as: Twentieth Century Berlin: Myth and Reality; Vienna Underground; German Song Cultures; The Meanings of Fairy Tales; Modernism and Desire: Germany 1890-1933; Shifting Identities in Modern Germany and a Dissertation on a subject of your choice.
In the TESOL component, we look at:
how language is used in everyday communication including in different contexts;
how language has developed over time;
how we learn our first language and subsequent languages;
how language operates in bilingual contexts;
how we produce and understand language in real time, as well as
how the underlying language system works for sounds and grammar.
how different methods are used to teach language;
how children learn an additional language;
how theories of second language acquisition relate to teaching;
how current research into English Language Teaching informs practice.
