Theatre & Drama Degree Requirements

The following requirements are in addition to, or further elaborate upon, those requirements outlined in The Graduate School Policy Guide.

PhD

The department does not admit students for the MA degree, but if circumstances warrant will award the MA to students on their way to the PhD. The MA in Theatre and Drama consists of 18 course units, including T/D 501 Methodology, and three graduate-level courses in European theatre history or drama after 1650; European theatre history or drama 1650-1914; and some aspect of theatre or drama in Asia, Africa, or the Americas. Additional courses to be selected in consultation with the programs Director. The MA is fulfilled upon satisfactory completion of a qualifying exam. Students must be admitted to the IPTD in order to participate in the MA.

  • TH/DRAMA 501 Doctoral Studies in Theatre and Drama: 1
  • At least one 400-level course in each area below
    • European theatre and drama after 1650: 1
    • European theatre and drama 1650-1914: 1
    • Theatre and drama of the Americas, Africa, or Asia: 1
  • Electives: 14
  • Total Required Units: 18 (Courses satisfying these requirements must have prior approval of the program director.)

Other PhD Degree Requirements
  • Examinations: late in second year or early in third year, qualifying examination for admission to candidacy consisting of three three-hour written sections followed by one oral examination; examination materials include dissertation prospectus, dissertation bibliography, and reading lists identifying (usually) three examination fields approved by student's dissertation committee and Executive Committee

  • PhD Dissertation: written dissertation and oral defense

  • Other: in each of first two years, student submits statement of current progress and program goals and an essay written in graduate seminar, both of which are added to student's program record; Executive Committee reviews record each year and makes recommendations to program director and in written statements to student; each review followed by a conference
