Many of your theatre modules will be delivered at Derby Theatre, a fully equipped, professional theatre and major live performance venue, allowing you to gain valuable industry experience and contacts as you learn. As part of the Joint Honours Theatre programme, you will have opportunities to develop your theatre making skills in writing, devising, directing, and applied theatre. This dynamic and exciting Joint Honours Theatre programme is taught by practising professional artists with expertise in their own fields. Built around process, experimentation and risk taking you will encounter a range of practices to explore and develop your theatre making skills. An exciting part of your studies is the opportunity to engage with professional work experience within Derby Theatre or partner organisations, which will contribute to the development of your professional portfolio. You can also take part in public performances including studio theatre spaces, and off-site in the community, schools, and art centres.‌

About this course

Our Joint Honours Theatre graduates are now working in a wide variety of areas, both in the theatre sector and beyond, including teaching, acting, creating new theatre companies, producing, directing, marketing, arts administration, BBC radio and education advisory work.

We create many opportunities for you to showcase your work to a wide audience. By the time you finish your course we will have introduced you to many important agencies and support networks relevant to working in the arts industry and helped you structure your CV and reflect on your employability.

We will do our best to equip you to be able to successfully plan your career development. You will develop the diverse range of skills and interests that employers are looking for and investigate other options, such as the potential of becoming self-employed or working on a freelance basis.

Course programme

What you will study

You can study Theatre as either a joint, major or minor subject. This will determine how many modules you’ll study at each stage. Please check your other subject to ensure it is possible to create your chosen combination.

You will have a range of modules that you can engage in. Some modules are compulsory and all students must take these, while other modules are optional, so you can choose your pathway depending on your own specific interests, and how they might combine with your other subject.

First year (Level 4)

You will be involved in a year of experimentation and risk taking as you develop your theatre making skills. You will have opportunities to explore devising strategies and develop your skills in script writing, as well as engage in theoretical study and critical debate. You will learn directly from Derby Theatre staff, working with your tutors, in industry focussed modules.

You will study modules such as:

  • Critical Dialogues
  • Spotlight on Industry Practice
Second year (Level 5)

You will continue to develop your experimentation and practical learning through professional practice. There are opportunities to perform in Derby Theatre’s studio theatre and create work for community audiences. You will partake in professional work experience to support your career aspirations and develop your networking skills.

You will study modules such as:

  • Devising Laboratory
  • Introduction to Applied Theatre
  • Spotlight on Research and Professional Development
Third year (Level 6)

You will enhance your portfolio through an ongoing programme of skills and career development. You will have opportunities to explore your skills as a director, and engage in seminars with a range of industry professionals as well as develop your unique research interests.

You will study modules such as:

  • Directors and Directing
  • Shakespeare’s Tragedies
  • Research Project
  • Spotlight on Employability
